Gateway Grapevine – August 2016

grape_vine_embroideryAugust 2016

“Pleasure before Business” could be our new motto!

For our July meeting, we moved the sharing of stories directly after the potluck dinner in order to accommodate Crown residents who might wish to join the fun. Surprisingly, this seemed to cut the business portion of the meeting nearly in half. Yay, progress! We enjoyed seven stories that evening, including:

  • An untitled, new work in progress by Sue Hinkel, inspired by Eve Bunting’s Terrible Things: An Allegory of the Holocaust.
  • An original, untitled work in progress by Marilyn Sue Warren that wove together Chuck Berry, an 8-year-old girl, a mean man, and a presidential election.
  • “The Purple Lady”: an original story of friendship and the benefits of stepping out of one’s comfort zone, by Jennifer Bennett.
  • Roger Rose‘s version of “Sir Gawain and the Loathly Lady” or “Sovereignty”.
  • Michael Bennett’s original tall tale “Bibles over Baltimore”, which won him a spot in the 2nd annual MO State Liars Contest.
  • Jane Hardy‘s original story of her culinary adventures with modern technology, entitled “The Very Bad Carrots”.
  • Nancy Fox‘s breadcrumb path of “How I Got Here”.
  • and Sera Jennings‘ original tale of “4 Days on the AT with a Rock Band”.

Membership Dues for 2016 are $20.

Please send a check to Marilyn Sue Warren at 4375 Humber Circle— St Louis, MO 63129 or pay in cash or check at the next Gateway meeting.

Upcoming Opportunities:

The St Louis Renaissance Festival will now be held in the fall. This year’s dates are the weekends (Saturday, Sunday) of September 17th – October 16th.

Gateway Storytellers has been providing the festival with family friendly entertainment for years, and the need for G-rated material is stronger than ever. Tellers sign up for one or two days of telling (3-4 half hour sets spread throughout the day). Watch for upcoming emails from Gateway about registering to participate in this fun storytelling opportunity.

The 17th Annual Storytelling Celebration in Kansas City will take place November 2nd-5th.

More information about this local festival will be coming to their website in September.

Tellabration, a nationwide storytelling event, will take place November 19, 2016.

More information about St Louis Tellabration events will become available as arrangements are made.

The 2017 River and Prairie Storyweavers Chicken Festival will be held in Topeka, Kansas, January 20th-22nd.

Everyone will have an opportunity to tell, whether your story involves chickens or not. For more information, check out the RAPS website here.

The 2nd annual MO State Liars Contest:

Among the 11 finalists sharing their tall tales at the Columbia Public Library in July were Gateway’s Vice President Michael Bennett, and his daughter (and our youngest member at just 17 years old) Linda Bennett.

The competition was fiercely hilarious, but Gateway was well represented by these two veteran tellers who were just happy to have made it to the finals.

The next Gateway Meeting will be held at the Crown Center on September 27th.

Potluck dinner begins at 6:00 pm, stories at 6:30 pm, and business will be conducted at the end. We hope to see you all there!
